Most protein powders pose a risk to women’s health, according to a new study by researchers from US establishment Clean Label Project.

The study suggested that most protein powders used by women either to gain weight or muscle contain toxic compounds and are dangerous to health.

The researchers examined 134 of the best-selling protein powders from 52 different brands, looking at more than 130 harmful ingredients. The ingredients included pesticides and industrial chemicals used in plastics known as BPA and contaminants associated with cancer and other health conditions.

They also found that about 75 percent of plant-based powders tested positive for containin lead.
