Social media users and activists have started a hashtag on social networking site Twitter, in order to raise awareness about the existence of fake accounts created with the intent of misrepresenting Omanis.
A number of such accounts exist on Twitter, most of which were activated in December 2017. The accounts use Omani names and women’s names in particular, being used in order to spread content that violates the morals and ethics of Omani society.
Furthermore the content posted by the accounts violates Oman’s internal and external policies, attempting to cause disputes with other countries, which is of course contrary to the Sultanate’s neutral position.
Twitter users have demanded that people report any such accounts.
