According to statistics released by the Coast Guard, fifteen search and rescue operations were performed  in January across the Sultanate, during which sixty people on board the boats were assisted.

Most of the requests for assistance came due to engine failure owing to depleted fuel.

The number of marine collision incidents recorded during the past month was two, one of which was near Masirah Island in South Al Sharqiyah and resulted in the death of Asian nationals. The other occurred of the coast of Mahut in Al Wusta, causing damage to the both boats. Last month, a tourist boat that sank off the coast of Seeb was reported to have lead no deaths or injuries. No incidents of drowing at sea were reported last month.

In terms of security, the Coast Guard seized four smuggling boats on which 38 infiltrators were on board. The Coast Guard also managed to seize a narcotics smuggling boat in Dhofar.

The Royal Oman Police has called upon anyone heading out to sea to listen to weather warnings and not take risks.
