British physicist Stephen Hawking has died at the age of 76.
“Hawking died during his sleep at his home in Cambridge,” the family said in a statement.
His sons, Robert, Lucie and Tim, said “we are deeply saddened at our beloved father’s passing today. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man.”
“His courage and perseverance, with his brilliance and humor, has inspired people all over the world.”
