Oman Airports has opened the cargo building at the new Muscat International Airport.
At present it is only receiving consignments, with shipping to be handled through the old building until the 29th of March.
The new cargo building is equipped with state-of-the art facilities that will enable it to meet the rapid growth of cargo and shipping in the Sultanate.
Covering an area of 32,000 square metres, the new cargo terminal has the capacity to handle 350,000 tonnes of cargo per year, with this figure able to be increased to 500,000 tonnes in the future.
The cargo terminal is fitted with the fully automated Material Handling System, which allows seamless handling of cargo containers and pallets. The system uses Elevating Transfer Vehicle technology to move and store cargo in a systematic manner, which will ensure more effective delivery of goods.
